AirAsia Runway Ready Designer Search 2017 in Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week

What would you do when a week before your birthday, you were invited to go to an all expense paid trip to Malaysia to watch a fashion show? AHHH, who in their right mind would say no to this?? At the drop of a hat, I simply packed my bags and I’m ready to go!

It was my first time to fly with AirAsia and contrary to popular opinion, it didn’t feel any less safe or uncomfortable. I even fell asleep in the plane and woke up in Malaysia with enough energy to power through the main highlight of the entire trip: The Air Asia Runway Ready Designer Search 2017.

AirAsia Runway Ready Designer Search has been going on for years and was established with the aim of empowering youth and developing young talents in the fashion industry across the region. This year, its Grand Finale was held at Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week Ready To Wear 2017 (KLFW RTW 2017). The finale saw a total of twenty young talents from all 10 ASEAN countries showcase their ASEAN-themed creations on the runway. Two top aspiring designers were selected to represent each country after a regionwide audition tour across Asean.

Maria Esme Palaganas
Jerome Tayao

Budding designers, Maria Esme Palaganas (from De La Salle College of St. Benilde) and Jerome Tayao (from Fashion Institute of the Philippines) were very honored to be given the opportunity to represent the Philippines and and to showcase their wonderful creations on the runway. The search kicked off in April in Manila before moving on to Bandar Seri Begawan, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Ho Chi Minh City, Yangon, Jakarta, Bangkok, Vientiane and ended in Phnom Penh in June.

Tran Thi Tu

Tran Thi Tu from Vietnam was announced as the Grand Winner and walked away with prizes including a confirmed show segment to showcase their full collection at KLFW RTW 2018, a year-long mentorship from the KLFW RTW team, P300,000 sponsored by FashionValet to produce a capsule collection to be sold on fashionvalet.com, 150,000 AirAsia BIG Points, a six-page fashion spread in AirAsia’s Travel3Sixty inflight magazine, a special feature in Female Malaysia magazine and a pair of AirAsia return flights. WOW!

PH Represent!

The show has been nothing short of spectacular. Each designer has awed us with their talent and creativity in the field of fashion. Last year’s AirAsia Runway Ready Designer Search winner, Anuruk Jaidee from Thailand, also made a special appearance and showcased his full collection on the KLFW RTW 2017 runway. Indeed, ASEAN has great potential and with continuous support and mentorship from fashion industry leaders, the fashion industry can grow by leaps and bounds across the region.
