MY JOURNEY AS A BLOGGER: HOW I FOUND MYSELF

Two weeks ago I was nominated for "Breakthrough Blogger of the Year" for the annual #EBloggersBall happening this Sept. 16, 2017. It was a complete surprise to have been nominated considering how large the growing industry is. When I first received the email from NBCUniversal International Networks I had to reread it and check it twice to see if the email was really addressed to me. It's a very humbling feeling. With this, I found myself thinking about how I actually started as a blogger.

It all began as a simple hobby. I had no idea what it would lead up to. It felt nice having a platform to share my style (#ootd as they call it) and an avenue to express myself. I remember my college days like they were yesterday wherein I had to juggle my studies and blog. There were times when my mom would not allow me to attend blogger events because she got worried that I may be losing focus towards my acads. Thankfully, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from UP Diliman with my dream course BS Business Administration. Since then, my mom became a little less strict and let me do what I want to do. Maybe that's how it is sometimes, our parents need to see that we are acting maturely in order for them to realize that we are all grown up and capable of making important decisions in our lives.

The minute I got my diploma and entered the "real world" #adulting, I didn't stop blogging. In fact while I was lost and uncertain about what I wanted to do with my life and which job to take, the only thing that I was certain of at that time was blogging.

Growing up in a traditional Chinese family, I was molded to become a successful businesswoman just like my parents. I was expected to either run our family business (in the near future) or set-up my own business. It's like my life has been so structured and planned out. While my batchmates started working in multinational companies and pursuing their own careers, I was attending events left and right while helping out in our family business. I didn't know what I want. I doubted myself to the point that I was making my decisions based on what others expected of me, not what I wanted for myself. But then blogging has changed my life and has shown me so much is possible. It has opened many doors of opportunity for me. I met a lot of wonderful people along the way - brand owners, marketing and PR managers, and other bloggers and influencers turned lifelong friends. Things have become a little clearer and a lot less confusing. I realized the need to deviate from the norm and to get out of my comfort zone. I didn't want to just try to fit with conventional notions of success. I made one of the hardest most crucial decisions of my life not knowing what lies ahead. I was scared at first. It wasn't easy facing the uncertainty and the risk that came with my decision, but I chose to stood by what I believe in. I wanted to create a path that's built on my own perspective.

At my own pace, I've found a fulfilling career path: I'm currently working in Megaworld Corporation as Senior Property Specialist, while blogging on the side. I've learned that at the end of the day, what's important is that we make conscious choices that make us happy and that lead us to enjoy life.

As pretty as it seems on the surface, being a blogger isn't all rainbows and unicorns. To be honest, it's hard to manage and run a blog. I'm constantly challenged to create quality content that's both creative and relevant to my readers. People sometimes ask me, "What makes you stand out from all the other bloggers out there?" And I tell them, "I think what differentiates me from other bloggers is my own personal style. I believe that each blogger is unique, has her own personal branding, and her own story to share." This is my favorite part of being a blogger: having the power to connect with people, motivate them, and inspire them whether it be as simple as buying that dress they've always been hesitant to, then turns out it made them feel more beautiful and confident about themselves. I believe this is the essence of being a blogger. More than the fame, the likes & comments, the money we earn or freebies we receive, it's about making a positive impact in the lives of people around you.

To the one reading this, yes you, if you're aspiring to become a blogger or whatever it is that you wanna become, be that someone. Claim it as early as now. Chase after your dreams no matter what it takes. You don't always have to listen to what other people have to say, as long as it makes you happy and you feel it in your heart that it's right, GO FOR IT!

  7. I enjoyed this. Nakaka inspire po! Lagi akong nagbabasa sa mga blog. But this is soo true malapit sa realidad. And as always meron akong natutunan sa bawat article na nababasa ko, meron isang quote na lagi naiiwan sakin. And for this blog i am amaze when you say ''I chose to stood by what I believe in. I wanted to create a path that's built on my own perspective.'' Someday maybe it i want to pursue my dreams. Without any hessitation.
